If you have ever used Linux you would know that there are plenty of themes out there, ranging from the hundred MacOS style themes to the Material inspired ones. One of my all of favourites is the Arc theme that is until I noticed how much I prefer a more neutral colour palette. For that reason, I enjoy using Adwaita because it has the least amount of issues when it comes to integrating with certain applications, it’s very legible but sadly the titlebars look huge, especially on a 24″ 1080p monitor.
I don’t know why it took me this long to actually come up with a hybrid of the two themes, but here it is! I created this theme using Oomox which is used to create GTK themes, simply put the colours in and away you go! It has several theming styles built in (Arc, Numix, Materia). After some tinkering and picking the Adwaita colours, I think I’ve made it.
It’s called, A r c w a i t a!
The dark variant is inspired by the Adwaita-dark theme which comes on basically all distros out there. I’ve made a few tweaks to the selection colour but apart from that, it feels like a better Adwaita theme now.
Some people call this the “darker” theme but really it just has a dark titlebar. It’s perfect for when you need a light theme but you still want to have the dark titlebars as it makes a nice contrast.
Note: It is recommend that you use GNOME for this theme, I haven’t tested it in XFCE, MATE or Cinnamon but odds are it should work.
If you want to try it out, you can download the latest release from my GitHub repository or you can run the command below which will install it in your
cd /tmp/ && git clone https://github.com/berkiyo/arcwaita.git && cd arcwaita && mkdir -p ~/.themes && cp -r Arcwaita* ~/.themes
